ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to examine the Influence of social media on the Writing and Reading Ability of University of Benin Undergraduate Students.

A survey research design which involves collection of data through the use of questionnaire was adopted to gather relevant data. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. The population of the study comprises of full-time undergraduate students of University of Benin while the sample for the study comprised forty-two (42) students randomly selected from three faculties. Frequency count and percentages, were used to analyze the data collected to answer the research questions.

The findings found out that students in University of Benin commonly used social media platforms are Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and Google Email, which they find suitable for personal reasons. The study further identified some influence of using social media on the writing and reading ability of undergraduate students.

It was recommended among others that undergraduates should be enlightened on the importance of having a good reading culture which will ultimately enhance their reading comprehension. Students should be counselled on the influence of social media on their academic performance. School counselors should also be able to educate students on the negative and positive influence of social media on their writing and reading ability.
