ABSTRACT
This research work scrutinized the domains of language use in the Iwa-ji festival of Ukpo in Dunukofia local government area of Anambra state Nigeria. Is work intends to fill the gap of proper documentation of language use in Iwa-ji festival of Ukpo. The motivation for this work is the observation made concerning the domains of language use in the festival. The theoretical framework used in this work is the ethnography of communication by Hymes Dell. The source of this project is gotten from personal intuition as a native speaker and interviews which are the primary data. Data was also gathered and collected from textbooks, internet and relevant materials from the library. This constitute the secondary data. The objective of the study is to analyze the ritualistic use of language in the festival and how best it could portray the peoples culture and tradition. It also aims at presenting the culture and tradition of Ukpo people. During the course of the study, it was discovered that indigenes of ukpo all over the globe do not eat new yam until it has been celebrated as demanded by their custom. Findings of the study are the different categorization of language use which are language use: in introduction and greetings, in prayers, in libation, and in incantations. This work will add value to the linguistic environment thereby acting as materials for other researchers in future. It is work recommended that festival is part of the culture of the community and promoting the culture avoids the death of the language.
