ABSTRACT
Language as the basic tool of communication that is used for our day to day activities shows the importance it play in our lives, our culture and our worldview are all encompassed in our language. Through language, we express our thoughts, ideas and emotions. Festivals are a reflection of ourselves, our culture and mode of interaction between the people in our community. It is an exposition to our values, beliefs, heritage and our totality as a community which we hold on to tenaciously. This study focuses on the use of language during this festival of the Igbo people of Nigeria which is the Igbos. This research work mirrors a brief history of the people, their religion, occupation and lifestyle. The Igbos new yam festival is not just any festival to the Igbos, but a mirror of the people, their culture, heritage, and the language of the people used in the festival are deep-rooted in the culture of the people. This study is geared at studying and analyzing the components and symbolic significances off the festival.
