ABSTRACT
This project investigated the origins, facilitators, effects, and reasons for youth involvement in political violence and thuggery in Nigeria, with a specific focus on Oredo Local Government. Grounded in pluralist theory, this study unveils significant sources of political violence, including religious differences, socio-economic disparities, political grievances, corruption, and a lack of accountability. It also identifies factors that facilitate thuggery, such as poverty, unemployment, inadequate law enforcement, weak judicial systems, cultism, and Illiteracy. The research underscores the adverse impacts of political violence on peace, the economy, and citizens’ rights. Youth involvement is attributed to economic inequalities, self-interest, frustration, and the desire for power. To address these pressing issues, respondents highlight the importance of peaceful negotiations, collaboration among political leaders, law enforcement efforts, engagement of religious leaders, and awareness campaigns.
These findings shed light on the complex dynamics of political violence in Nigeria and offer practical strategies for mitigation. One significant finding is the pervasive quest for power by any means, even through the use of force, as a fundamental factor driving political violence and thuggery within Nigeria's democratic processes. This study also illuminates the intricate connection between corruption and the Ignorance and low level of political education: Some youths are lured into unacceptable behaviors in the society due to ignorance, low level of political education, lack of democratic value, poor knowledge of what democracy stands for and inadequate knowledge of the electoral process. They just accept to do any assignment given to them provided money is involved. They maim, kill and destroy with impunity as directed by their ‘god fathers’ without looking back. accountability in public office, which tragically amplifies the prevalence of political corruption in Nigeria. To achieve a healthy democratic practice and reap the associated benefits, it is imperative that all stakeholders join hands to confront and eradicate the factors exacerbating political thuggery and violence in the country. The recommendations put forth include making public office less financially attractive, stringent prosecution of electoral offenders, and fostering citizenship vigilance. These measures aim to curtail the allure of political violence and promote a safer and more democratic Nigeria.
Furthermore, this study suggests areas for further research, including exploring methods to reduce the attractiveness of public office, examining community organizing strategies to combat political violence in Nigeria, and establishing a comprehensive database to monitor and address cases of political thuggery and violence in the country.
