ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to determine the yield and the phytochemical composition of O. gratissimum. Scent leaves were bought, air-dried and milled to leaf meal. Scent leaf was wet-milled and pressed to remove the juice. The ruminant residue was dried as bagasse. The result showed that the yield of scent leaf bagasse has 17.49%. The result indicated that scent leaf plant contains some major bioactive compound that can inhibit the growth of microorganism, thereby proving it as an effective potentials source of antibiotic. Phytochemical screening revealed that the scent leaf meal and bagasse contains saponins, tanning, alkanoid, steroids, flavonoid, But plobatanins and Glycosides were absent in scent leaf meal and bagassese .the presence of this phytochemical screening in the plant leaf contains saponins, tannins and alkaloids which help to inhibits bacterial growth. The plant extract might also be a potential source for drugs formulation as the plant leaves are used traditionally for curing of many infectious diseases. Ocimum gratissimum over the years has been used in many ways which human has found so use in making the usefulness out of it. Scent leaf bagasse should be incorporated into feed formulation for livestock owing to its high yield and phytochemical properties.
