ABSTRACT
The study sought to investigate the relationship between work environment, capacity building and employee productivity in NIMASA Lagos. The research design used for this study is the survey research design, using questionnaire and interview to assess the impact of work environment and capacity building on employee’s productivity at NIMASA Lagos. Thus, the population of the study comprised all the 800 employees of NIMASA Lagos. However, a sample of 200 employees was used as the case study. In order to ensure that all the strata of the population were fairly represented and all cases within each stratum had equal chance of being selected, stratified random sampling was used to select the sample for this research. In an attempt to realize the objectives of the study, 200 questionnaires were administered to the employees of NIMASA Lagos and interviews were conducted for 10 of this same sample. The data was sorted using both descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS and the data underwent validity and reliability tests. It was found that, the work environment was not so good and in terms of capacity building, there have been a number of trainings but were not consistent and adequate enough. However, the relationship amongst employees and their superiors was cordial in NIMASA Lagos. Work environment alone reduces employee absenteeism and reduces employee turnover while capacity building enhances employee’s confidence, ideas, skills and contributions to work. In the end, work environment and capacity building at NIMASA Lagos was statistically significant for productivity of employees at NIMASA Lagos. It was among other things recommended that for the productivity of the organization to be enhanced, the management should see establishing a good work environment and capacity building opportunities as an investment rather than as an overhead.
