ABSTRACT

The aim of this work is to identify word formation processes in Edo language. According to Yule (1985 p35-60) he defines word formation as “a way of forming and creating words from already existing words”. Previous studies have only paid attention to the phonology and Syntax of Edo language to the detriment of internal structures of words in the language, This work examines the word formation processes available in Edo language such as Affixation, compounding, Reduplication, clipping and borrowing. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources, the primary data collected from interviewing native speakers of various ages. Also the Ibadan 400 wordlist was also used. The secondary data were obtained from the combination of published and unpublished articles and materials related to Edo language morphology. The objective of this work is to account for word formation processes in Edo language. The theory employed for this study is the basic linguistic theory as it is an appropriate theory for describing word formation processes in Edo language. The findings of this study reveals that Edo language does not invite words randomly into its vocabulary it establishes the concept of systematism in Edo language’s word formation strategies.
