ABSTRACT

The study analyzes linguistic data collected from native speakers to investigate the morphological trends and principles influencing the development of new words in the ìkálè dialect of Yoruba. . The researcher interviewed six native speakers of Ìkálè dialect. Three bilinguals and three of them speaking only the Ìkálè dialect. Linguistic data was acquired through oral interview requesting for story-telling and folk songs. Data analysis involved identifying and categorizing word patterns based on morphological and semantic criteria.  The study aims at describing the word formation processes in Ìkálè dialect of Yoruba with the objectives to identify the word formation processes in Ìkálè dialect of Yoruba, to analyze the phonological processes involved in word formation in the Ìkálè dialect and to investigate morphological rules governing word formation in Ìkálè dialect. Reduplication, compounding and affixation are the word formation processes discussed in the work. The study discovered that consonants serve as infix in the dialect and they occur with reduplication process. Also, vowels serve as prefix to form new word.
