WOMEN’S POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The research work focused on women’s political participation and governance:; challenges and prospect using Egor Local Government Area of Edo State within the period of 2015-2023.  The objectives of the study includes examining the level of women participation in politics and governance in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, the factors responsible for women’s poor participation in politics and governance in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State and the solutions to women’s poor participation in politics and governance in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State?

The study utilized the survey method, the use of questionnaire as a means of collecting of data was also employed. It was discovered that low participation of women in politics and governance in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State was as a result of several challenges such as poor electoral process, high cost of elections, gender inequality among others. The study recommends among others that there should be a  review  of  the  1999  constitution  to state  specifically  the  principles  and  methodology  of  affirmative  action  as  exemplified  in  Uganda,  South  Africa  and  Rwanda.  Affirmative  action  and  quotas  have  been  used  across  the  globe  to  address  the  need  to  close  the  gender- gap  in  political - bureaucratic  development.  Nigeria  can  benefit  from  these  “best -practices
