ABSTRACT
Mass media in Edo state has done so well in the development of Edo State. It refers to a diverse array of media technologies that reach a large audience via mass communication.1 The role which mass media play in Edo State is second to none. This research work has done well in examining those roles mass media play in the Edo State. in doing so, it examined the history of mass media to have started as early as 868AD when the first printed books known as Diamond Sutra appeared in China. While others argue that the Roman Acta Diurna which was printed around 59 B.C was the time when the first form of media appeared. But the most acceptable among all the history of media was seen in the 1400s, when Johannes Gutenberg invented a printed press which induced the mass production of books. With the invention, people were able to write and was able to print their books. Johannes Gutenberg printed the first book, a Latin Bible on a printing press with movable types in 1453.2 This invention equally enabled the publication of newspapers more than it used to be. By 1612 and 1620, newspaper as a form of mass media had developed but took until the 19 th century to reach to a mass variety of audience directly.
