WOMEN REPRESENTATION AND DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION IN NIGERIA: A CASE OF ANAMBRA STATE.

ABSTRACT

Women in Nigeria have encountered discriminations and marginalization (from the society through socio-cultural and economic factors, and political party structure) while attempting to be part and parcel of the political system. The issue of gender balancing and the justification for gender inclusion and equality in the political system prompted the study “Women representation and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria: A Case of Anambra State. The inclusion of women in the political process in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized as they make up about 50% of the population of the country, and Anambra state in particular. The study therefore, raise certain research questions that are in line with the objectives as follow; does women representation affect democratic consolidation; does party structure shape women’s representation in politics in Anambra state; and does socio-cultural and economic factors affect women’s inclusion in politics in Anambra state? The scientific enquiry provided answers to the questions and hypotheses which were formulated were tested at the end of the study. The study utilized the liberal feminist theory. The research design employed was the cross-sectional (survey) design. The sources of data were the primary and secondary sources. The primary sources was obtained from questionnaires administration and in-depth interview. The in-depth interview was a face to face method. The population of study is the population of registered voters in Anambra state as at 2022 which was 2,656,437. The sample size of 1,209 were administered in the three (3) senatorial district of Anambra state. The sampling technique were simple random sampling, cluster sampling and purposive sampling method. The descriptive statistical tool of frequency distribution, simple percentages and chi-square were employed in the analysis of data testing the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings of the study shows that there is a significant relationship between democratic consolidation and women representation in politics in Anambra state; that there is a significant relationship between party structures and women representation in politics in Anambra state; and there is also a significant relationship between socio-cultural and economic factors and women’s inclusion in politics in Anambra state. Based on the findings, several recommendations were made among which is a gender-sensitive training of children, men and women beginning from the family which will help to eliminate stereotypes and create an open-minded society for future benefits in the state.
