WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN TRANSFORMATION OF AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assess women’s participation in transformation of agricultural development programmes of Ovia North East Local Government Area. The specific objectives of the study will be to: describe the socio-economic characteristics of the women farmers, examine the level of participation of women in agricultural development programmes, determine the respondents access to agricultural development programmes and extension workers, determine the effects of the respondents’ participation in agricultural development programmes on their and identify the constraints militating against women participation in agricultural development programmes in the study area. A two-stage sampling procedure was used in selecting the respondent for the study. The first stage was a purposive selection of six (6) communities and the second stage involved simple random sampling of 20 female farmers from each of the six communities giving a total of 120 respondents. Primary data were generated through the administration of a well-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as; frequency counts, percentages, mean scores and standard deviation were used to analysed the objectives while the hypotheses were achieved through the Logit regression analysis. The result revealed that majority (37.5%) of the respondents fall between age ranges of 40- 49 years and 73.3% of the participants were married while about 60.8% of participants had between 5-9 people as household size. Mean size of land cultivated by respondents was 1.5 hectares of land with 12 years farming experience. The mean 16 result showed that the farm income was ₦735,761.82 and off-farm income was ₦650,736.55. The mean result also showed there was high participation in Monitoring and Evaluation (m=2.25), programme implementation (3.17), Cash contribution (m=3.66) and Contribution in kind (m= 2.58. The result also showed that Lack of awareness (4.27), Illiteracy (4.11), little or no incentive (3.55), Lack of money (Inadequate capital) (4.39), unavailability of relevant information (3.55) and Lack of interest (3.52) were serious constraint to participation in agricultural development. Furthermore, the result indicates that Level of experience, Membership of any agricultural cooperative, Contact with ADP extension agent, Farm income and Offfarm income has significant relationship with level of participation in agricultural development. It could be recommended that agricultural development agency should create a system of awareness on any programmes that arises. Government should also support women with finance to increase participation in agricultural development programmes.
