ABSTRACT

The research work presents a history and dynamics of the society through which the Urhobo women explored and proved their impact in the economic life of the people. The foregoing of the study has clearly shown that the economic processes in Urhobo metropolitan was co-ordinated by both male and female folks who were fully committed to the development of the traditional society. Women in pre colonial period were not a homogeneous group that lived static lives relegated to the domestic sphere, but rather, they were active as they contested and transformed their families and society through their diverse roles in economic realities and lives of the people. They were actively involved in virtually all forms of economic activities. From the research, it was observed that the women held a basically more complementary role rather than subordinate position to their men counterparts in indigenous Urhobo pre colonial society, proving vital to the survival of the community and it’s inhabitants.
