ABSTRACT

Music is a language that is spoken all over this floating orb that we the human race call our home. Even in the depths of the seas dolphins, whales and many other sea creatures have crafted unique songs with which they communicate with each other and express themselves. However music tastes and styles differ in as many diverse ways as the human race itself and, indeed, the plethora of species that cover the surface of the earth. In as much as music is a language that we all speak these differences in sounds, rhythmic patterns, language used and so on. Alternative music is music that doesn't fit into the commonly accepted Standards of what music should sound like in the society, and as such, alternative music might take different forms in different places and societies. In West Africa, alternative music (or Alté as it is known as by most youth) is a subject that causes a little bit of controversy in the community because most people believe that Alté Music is music for the rich and upper middle class of Nigeria. This study is to unravel the mystery around Alté music, to discover what Alté really is and its relevance to the society.
