ABSTRACT

The importance of water quality assessment, especially in rural areas cannot be overemphasized. This is because of the strategic importance and vital roles that water plays in human existence and balance in the ecosystem. Water is often polluted by certain factors of which some are preventable while others may be considered to be natural occurrence. However, the consumption of polluted water is very detrimental to human health and can consequently lead to death if care not being taken. Water is an irreplaceable resource and hence, the need to frequently assess its potability especially among rural dwellers.

The method adopted in water analysis depends on quite number of factors ranging from the available technology, skills, objective, types of water source and location of study. In this study however, simple laboratory tests were deployed towards determining the quality of water present in the samples collected from the study area.

The results from the study has proven that most of the water sources available to the community is open or partially concealed. This therefore exposes the water to direct contact with the atmosphere and hence results into frequent pollution. This was as the results from the analysis carried out on the water samples collected form the community. The water samples from the community were also observed to contain some traces of heavy metals such as lead, calcium and magnesium. The presence of these metals suggest that the water has some level of hardness and hence, the recommendation for proper treatment of water from the study area before its consumption.
