ABSTRACT

The study assessed water physicochemical parameters and sediment characteristics of Ogideakpe River, In Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. The broaad objective was to determine the physical and chemical parameters of the river, the water quality of the river using the water quality index (WQI) and the heavy metal concentration in water and sediment of the risver. . Spatial and Temporal variation in the Physico-chemical parameters revealed the pH to be alkaline ranging from 6.33-6.86 and was within the permissible limit . Electricial conductivity had no significant difference as it was below the permissible limit (60 μS/cm) TDS , Turbidity, Sulphate, Phosphate, Nitrate, Chloride , Alkalinity, Hardness, Dissolved oxygen, Magnesium and all other physico - chemical parameter were all within the permissible limit (P>0.05). Heavy metal content in water revealed Pb, Cr, Ni, Zinc, Fe were all within the permissible limit (P>0.05). Hence, the Ogideakpe River has experienced minimal contamination, as demonstrated by the levels of heavy metals in the surface water and sediments. Given the delicate health of aquatic ecosystems, continuous monitoring of this river is recommended, especially since there is limited data available on some of the river's environmental indicators.
