ABSTRACT
The study examined the vulnerability and adaptation to flooding in Uvwie Local Government, Delta State. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Field work and distribution of questionnaires were used to collect data in eight (8) sample sites in the Uvwie Local Government Area. The study revealed that the cause of flooding in the Uvwie Local Government Area is as a result of poor drainage system and also identified other causes such as bad road; and other issues relating to poor urban planning. The study also established that floods have impacted on people’s socio-economic livelihoods and in critical aspects such as, business, housing, health, and also as an impediment to pedestrian and motorist movement. It was discovered from the research that the people employed a range of adaptation strategies such as use of embankment, wearing of rubber footwear, construction of wooden bridge above flood water etc. in managing flood hazard. This study further gave policy recommendations on control strategies to the combat flooding challenges in the Uvwie Local Government Area.
