ABSTRACT
The main objective of the study is to examine the impact of low voter’s turnout, the effect of election violence on voters’ turnout and to examine the role of the electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on voters’ turnout during elections on democratic consolidation in Nigeria. The population of this study consist of registered voters in Oluku ward 06 in Ovia North East local Government area of Edo state with total registered voters of one hundred and sixty eight thousand four hundred and forty six (176,846). With sample size of 120 respondents the research instrument used in the study is questionnaire. A descriptive analysis method of data Analysis was used and the collected data were analyzed using frequency count and percentages. The study revealed that low voters turnouts on democratic consolidation are as a result of Lack of trust from Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Low voters turnout have impact on democratic consolidation, the finding also reveal that when citizen feel disconnected form political process or believe that their vote does not count, they are less likely to participate in election. Thus, it could be inferred from the analysis that there is a negative effect of election violence on voter’s turnout. It is conclude that the 2023 general election indicate that the election fell short of the credibility threshold set out by the Situation Room.
