ABSTRACT
The study examined the impact of voter apathy on democratic consolidation in Nigeria; with focus on Edo 2020 gubernatorial election. The study discussed among other things the causes of apathy, the timeline of voter apathy in Edo State gubernatorial elections and the possible remedies from the perspective of INEC and other key major actors and stakeholders in electioneering process. Four research questions were raised for the purpose of this study notably; what are the factors that influence voters apathy?, what is the impact‘s of voter apathy on the outcome of an election?, what is the extent to which political parties and civil societies have gone in providing political education? And what are the possible solutions to voter apathy? The study adopted the survey research design. The sample size consisted of 100 residents of Oredo local government area in Edo State using a stratified random sampling technique. The major instrument of this study was the questionnaire which sought to answer the study research questions. The findings of this study revealed that the level of voter apathy among electorates in Benin metropolis is quite high.
