VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS SEEKING EYE CARE AMONG WORKERS IN THE MEDICAL HEALTH CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

Visual impairment is defined as a presenting visual acuity of worse than 6/12 in the better eye. The attitude of a population of people towards eye care is an important factor in seeking quality eye health. This study was done to determine the visual impairments among the workers of the medical health center of the University of Benin and their attitude towards seeking eye care. The study was carried out with 87 participants who filled out questionnaires and their visual acuity and external eye health checked. 43 (49.43%), of the 87 persons examined has ever had their eyes checked while 44 (50.57%) never sought eye care. Of those that has ever had an eye examination, 29 (67.44%) & 9 (20.93%) visited the optometry clinic in the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Eye department in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) which are close to their work place while 5 (11.63%) visited other clinics. 28 (32.18%) of the participants are visually impaired at far but of those visually impaired at far, 20 (71.43) ever had an eye examination while 8 (28.57%) never sought eye care. 51 (58.62%) of the total participants had a near visual impairment but of the persons with near visual impairment, 36 (70.59%) had ever sought eye care while 15 (29.41%) never had an eye examination. 38 (88.37%) of those that sought eye care used facilities close to the study location while 5 (11.63%) used other clinics.
