ABSTRACT

The drum is the foundation of Yoruba instrumental music. Early references to Yoruba music seem to place a high value on it use. This study discovered that Yoruba drum is not limited to Yoruba royal families and traditional rulers alone; nearly every Yoruba Orisa (god) also has his own special drum.

This project adopts a deep historical approach into existing literatures for history to advance, in both theoretical and pictorial framework. Thus, the relevance of drums and their liturgical function, especially in ritual ceremonies, cannot be over-emphasized.

This painting project is an effort to draw more attention to the visual expression of Bata drumming among the Yoruba in a pictorial composition using a naturalistic approach. The painting project was executed through construction of stretcher, stretching the canvas and priming. It would also capture making of miniature sketch and transfer of the sketch to the main canvas. The painting exercise include various stages and steps and finally detailing of figures. With the adherent to the element and principles of design, under the project supervisor the painting project is regarded as successful.
