ABSTRACT

This research undertook a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted issue of firearms proliferation, exploring the impact of the Edo State Vigilante operation on how it has contributed to firearms proliferation and cult-related violence in Edo State, Nigeria. The study underscores the urgent need to address the state security outfit entire operation, from membership down to issuance of weapon to members that is posing significant threat to public safety and security, with far-reaching implications for communities within and outside the state. The research begins by examining the various factors that fuel firearms proliferation, including socio-economic disparities, political instability, porous borders, and illicit arms trafficking networks. It highlights the role of these factors in perpetuating the availability and circulation of firearms within communities, exacerbating conflicts, and undermining efforts towards peace and development. The study relying on the primary data from the field was able to establish a significant correlation between firearms proliferation and cult-related violence in Edo State. By examining data on incidents of cult-related violence and firearms possession, the study reveals how the easy access to firearms fuels the activities of cult groups, leading to increased violence, intimidation, and insecurity within communities. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the critical importance of addressing firearms proliferation as a central component of broader security and development strategies. It calls for comprehensive and coordinated efforts involving government agencies, law enforcement, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders to tackle the root causes of firearms proliferation, enhance arms control measures, and promote peace building initiatives. By prioritizing efforts to curb firearms proliferation, stakeholders can mitigate the devastating impact of armed violence, safeguard communities, and pave the way for sustainable peace and development in Edo State and beyond.
