ABSTRACT
Alstonia boonei is a very large, deciduous, tropical forest tree which is native to Africa countries like Nigeria, Tanzania and Ethopia. Though,the blood pressure lowering effects of the ethanol extract has been investigated and hypotensive effects reported, the possible mechanism(s) of blood pressure lowering effect are yet to be elucidated. The effect of ethanol extract of Astonia boonei on vascular reactivity was evaluated in endothelium intact and endothelium denuded, 80 mM KCl pre-contracted, and indomethacin treated isolated thoracic aorta of Wistar rats (200-250 g) at the graded concentration of 0.78-25 mg/mL. About 2 mm of aortic ring was mounted in 20 mLorgan bath containing Krebs solution (Physiological salt solution) aerated with 95% oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide (Carbogen) maintained at 36 oC.
