ABSTRACT

This study explores the mutual intelligibility between two closely related varieties of Edo language, Oza Aibiokunla and Uhunmwode, which are spoken in the southern region of Nigeria. With increasing contact between these linguistic communities, understanding the level of comprehension between speakers of these varieties is crucial for linguistic research, language preservation, and effective communication strategies. Employing a mixed-methods approach, including comprehension tests, linguistic analysis, and participant interviews, this study aims to evaluate the degree of mutual intelligibility between Oza Aibiokunla and Uhunmwode speakers. By investigating lexical, phonological, and grammatical similarities and differences, this research contributes to the broader field of contact linguistics and language documentation. The findings will provide valuable insights for documentation and promotion of Edo language Heritage, insight into linguistics relatedness, evolution of linguistics varieties and many more.
