ABSTRACT

Study background: Health disparities exist across various sociodemographic factors, playing pivotal roles in shaping health status, and health measurement is central to healthcare evaluation. Objective: To evaluate the health status and determine specific demographic factors that affect the individuals living in Ekosodin, Edo State, Nigeria. Method: A cross-sectional observational design was adopted for this study. Data was collected from 450 participants using the EQ5D-5L questionnaire. Data was analysed using MS Excel 2010. Result: 52.2% (n=235) of participants were male and 47.7% (n=215) were female. On health status and age, a higher percentage (54.1%) of participants in higher age bracket (50 – 64 years) had reported more health problems related to mobility than those in lower age bracket (29.8%). Self care was also seen to improve with age. Pain and discomfort was reportedly higher in both younger (73.3%) and older participants (78.2%), but anxiety was more common among older participants (51.8%). Using the visual analogue scale, male participants was reported to have a higher value (73.41 ± 19.43%) than female (69.82 ± 19.40%).Participants with higher educational level had less problems with mobility (19.6%) and pain/discomfort (57.1%), although self care was reportedly higher in participants with lower educational level (19.1%). Students had a higher visual analogue score of (80.01 ± 19.46%) than government (70.76 ± 19.46) and private employee (74.42 ± 19.38), self employed (72.79 ± 19.41), and retired participants (61.40 ± 19.5), signalling as an indicator of better health status. Conclusion: The findings suggest that younger individuals in Ekosodin had better health status than the older ones and different demographic determinants contributed uniquely to these findings.
