ABSTRACT

The study focused on the utilization of library resources and services by library and information science undergraduates in university of Benin, Benin city. The study’s goal was targeted at determining the level of utilization of library resources by Library and Information Science Undergraduates, Assessing the impact of the use of the library resources, Identifying the challenges confronting the utilizing resources by L.I.S undergraduate students, Proposing Strategies to improve the utilization of library resources for undergraduate students for academic activities. The study adopted the use of descriptive survey research design. Due to the largeness in the population size, the researcher decides to make use of 30% of the total population of the study. Since the population of the study is 302 students, approximately the researcher sampled 91 students. The obtained data were analysed using frequency counts, simple percentages, mean and standard deviation. Questionnaire titled ”the utilization of library resources and services by library and information science undergraduates in university of Benin.” were drawn and administered, Ninety-three (93) copies were retrieved from the respondents and found worthy of use. The study findings examined the utilization of library resources by LIS undergraduates. It found that students use library computers and study facilities for academic work, frequently access physical books and print resources, and utilize interlibrary loan services for additional materials, it also revealed the positive impact of library resource usage, such as support for academic assignments and research, enhanced understanding of Library and Information Science concepts, and improved academic performance and research quality. However, the study highlighted challenges in resource utilization, including information overload, limited access to updated research materials, and technical barriers to digital resources. To improve resource utilization, the study suggested strategies such as regular orientation programs, user-friendly digital search tools, , and online tutorials for navigating databases. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made to enhance the utilization of library resources and services, Specifically, Libraries should organize regular orientation and training sessions, Libraries should implement intuitive digital interfaces and mobile-friendly platforms, Libraries must prioritize acquiring and updating research materials, particularly in digital formats, to ensure students have access to the latest information, Academic institutions and governments should invest in modern and sustainable technologies, they should provide updated hardware, software, and internet connectivity.
