ABSTRACT

In this work, the geotechnical characteristics that go into deciding a building or structure's foundation within Airport Road G.R.A. are examined in a major city in Nigeria's south-central region. Samples were collected from a drilled borehole at depths 1m, 3m, and 6m respectively. These samples were subjected to geotechnical tests such as Moisture content, Particle size analysis, Atterberg limit, Bulk density determination test, and Triaxial shear test. The analysis of these soils revealed the following results, the particle size is rich in clays with more than 51% fines, atterberg limit having a plasticity of medium to high with for plastic index 21.02% to 31.65%, 25.16% to 31.75% for plastic limit, 46.18% to 58.37% for liquid limit, specific gravity values between 2.40 and 2.67, and cohesion values between 22.0 and 24.0 KN/m2 . The results of the soil examination shows that the clay content increases with depth. This increase leads us to the conclusion that, depending on the type of structure, the type and depth of the foundation would differ due to the geotechnical soil strength. The foundation types include shallow foundation for depths less than 3m and deep foundation for depths larger than 3m.
