ABSTRACT
This research work underpinned on the tenets of Uses and Gratifications theory and Active Audience Theory investigated the use and effectiveness of new media channels among mass communication students. The study surveyed 280 respondents with the use of online questionnaire. The data collected revealed that social media platforms were the most frequently used new media channels, with the primary purpose being to obtain information. The majority of respondents strongly agreed that mass communication students should be widely abreast with new media channels. The study also found that fact-checking and source credibility were the most common means for checking the credibility of information obtained through new media channels. The research reveals the importance of new media channels in the field of mass communication and the need for students to be knowledgeable in this area.
