ABSTRACT

This study focused on the use of internet facilities on the efficiency of librarians in university libraries: a case study of University of Benin. Four (4) questions were raised for the study. The study adopted survey research design. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for collecting data; it was built around the research question by the researcher and validated by the researcher’s supervisor. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, mean and standard deviation. The major findings of the study are as follows: Librarians’ perceptions on the use of internet facilities in the workplace environment with reference to performance efficiency are positive. Librarians’ have positive perceptions towards the use of internet facilities in the workplace environment with respect to job responsibility. Challenges facing librarians in the use of internet facilities in academic libraries in university of benin include:getting the required money to maintain and upgrade the equipment and software,Inadequate money to pay license fees is a challenge, and continuous renewal of payment for access to electronic journals and online databases. Based on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are made: Librarians’ perceptions on the use of internet facilities in the workplace environment with reference to performance efficiency are positive. Therefore librarians should be encouraged and aided on the appreciation of internet facilities. Librarians’ have positive perceptions towards the use of internet facilities in the workplace environment with respect to job responsibility. Therefore, librarians should be encouraged towards use of use of internet facilities in the workplace environment amongst others.
