ABSTRACT

This study investigates the use of instructional materials in effective teaching and learning of Home economics in some selected public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area in Edo State. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population of this study comprised of two hundred(200) correspondents. The sample of the study was made up of fifty (50) students from some selected public secondary schools in Edo state which was chose through pick and ballot system.The research instrument used for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire titled “Use of instructional materials in effective teaching and learning of Home economics ”. The instrument for data collection was subjected to face validity by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts from the Department of Vocational and Technical Education and Department of Educational Management respectively, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. To 15 establish the reliability of the instrument, the internal consistency of the items were measured using the Cronbach alpha statistical tool. It yielded an alpha value of 0.79. The study used statistical analysis methods including mean, standard deviation, and twosample independent t-tests to investigate the use of instructional materials in effective teaching and learning of Home economics . Findings indicates that the instructional materials affect the effective teaching and learning of Home Economics to a high extent. it has been determined that the availability of fundamental, pertinent instructional materials is a prerequisite for effective teaching and that these materials are critical components of the educational process . Recommendations include collaborating with stakeholders, including teachers, students, parents, and policymakers, to identify and address barriers to effective teaching and learning in Home Economics education . Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the use of instructional materials significantly promotes effective teaching and learning of Home Economics in some selected public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area in Edo State.
