ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of cowpea as a means of nutrient recovery in a degraded ultisol of the university of Benin farmland. The field study was carried out at the Faculty of Agriculture Research and Experimental farm, university of Benin, Benin City. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design which was replicated three times with a spacing of 60cm x 30cm. The physical and chemical properties of the soils were analyzed. The soil chemical properties analyzed were PH, Total Nitrogen (TN) , Organic carbon (OC) ,Organic matter (OM), Available Phosphorus (Av). Potassium(K), Calcium (Ca) , Magnesium (Mg) , Sodium (Na), Hydrogen (H+), Aluminum(Al3+),  Available Sulphur, Sand, Silt and Clay. The soil Physical properties measured were, Sand, Silt, and Clay which were 885, 55, 60 respectively at pre planting and 885, 63 ,52 respectively after harvest. The soil PH at pre-planting and after harvest was moderately acidic (5.29 - 5.74).
