ABSTRACT
This study was designed to assess the extent of use and level of availability of instructional materials in teaching and learning of Health Education in Primary schools. To guide this study, Four research questions was raised. The study was delimited to primary school teachers in public primary schools in Oredo LGA. The survey research design was used in conducting the study.
The population of the study consisted of all primary school teachers in selected primary schools in Oredo LGA and a total of 150 teachers as sample size. The main instrument for the study was a self-structured questionnaire. The validity of the instrument was established by giving it to the supervisor of the research work. The reliability of the instrument was established using the test-retest method of estimating reliability. After computation, the reliability yielded a Coefficient of 0.78. The questionnaire was distributed directly to the respondents by the researcher.
After the collection and collation of the instrument, the data obtained were subjected to analysis using frequency counts and percentages. Results from the study showed among other things that, the level of availability of instructional materials is low; extent of use of instructional materials is poor; some factors has lead to the underuse of instructional materials and some possible solutions or strategies to enhance the extent of use was pointed out. Consequent upon the findings of this study, it was recommended that instructional materials be made readily available to all in the school environment; available instructional materials be made accessible to all in the school environment especially teachers and students; the Government should enact policies and campaigns should be made regarding the training of teachers in the use and manipulation of instructional materials and lastly, available instructional materials should be properly kept and maintained to ensure continuous use.
