ABSTRACT

The study examined University of Benin student‟s assessment on patron-client politics and democratic consolidation in Nigeria: a case study of Edo 2020 governorship election. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, three (3) research questions were raised. The sample of this study consists of Students from across ten (10) faculties in the University of Benin. The participants were selected using the simple random sampling technique to reduce any form of bias. Simple percentage and frequency counts were used to analyze collected data. Findings from the study revealed that; the winner takes all nature of the Nigerian politics is a reason for increase desire for patronage which has become the leading feature describing modern Nigerian politics. As a result, the nation and Edo state in particular is faced with poor democratic institutions which continue to threaten the practice of popular political participation and that if no concrete efforts are made to deal with the problem, it could hamper future democratic consolidation measures. Also, findings also revealed that not all necessary measures have been adopted in curbing the ills of political patronage as the nature of establishment1o (5) perations and character of most Nigerian political parties is generally not strong, disjointed, nonideological and twisted towards only winning the election at all cost and gain control of political and economic powers of the state.
