ABSTRACT
The study investigates university education in Nigeria; growth, prospect and problems. The study was interested in the problems, prospect and growth of university education.( 5) research questions were raised to guide the study. Two was answered directly while 3 was hypothesized and tested at 0.5 level of significance.
A descriptive research Survey design was adopted for the study,the targeted population of the study comprises of two thousand and four (2004) students from three faculties in the university of Benin. A sample of (196)one hundred and ninety six students were selected. The data collected for the study was a questionnaire tagged "questionnaire on university education in Nigeria and its effect on national development (QUEIND). The data was analysed using descriptive mean, percentage, standard deviation to answer the research questions while Pearson product moment correlation and t - test was used to test the hypthesis at 0.05 significant level.
Th finding's revealed that the influence of university education on national development have to do wit government involvement, manpower development and sprit of unity irrespective of cultural diversity. The study also revealed that there is a significant relationship between growth of university education and national development. It is therefore recommended that man power development will function properly through education, government should work together with stake holders and university commission to ensure that funds disbursed should be used for the right projects.
