ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of Union-Management Relations and Organizational growth in the University of Benin. In general opinion, the success of any organisation is not only measured by the amount of profit the company could make but also by the degree of industrial peace and harmony that could be maintained in the said organization. The overall aim of this dissertation is to identify the impact of union management relationship on the organisational productivity of the University of Benin.  A descriptive survey research design method was adopted for the study. A total of three hundred and ninety- two (392) out of Four hundred (400) questionnaires distributed were returned. Data collected were analysed and interpreted with the aid of descriptive statistical techniques such as total score and simple percentage, while the Social Science Statistical Analysis (SPSS) - statistic was used to test all hypotheses at various hypotheses tested showed that Academic Calendar is unstable and as a result matriculation and convocation do not occur as and when due as a result of incessant strikes. The findings indicated the impact of union-management relations in industrial crises, the impact of union-management relations on staff turnover and finally, the study show the management ability to resolve issues of conditions of service with unions without conflicts.

 The study recommended, that incessant strikes should be avoided as much as possible to avoid disruption of academic calendars and enables the students graduates as and when due. There should be a strategic plan between the union and the management that will enhance the peaceful co-existence between them which will increase the performance level of Universities in Nigeria. Adequate provision of favourable work environment for employees will enhance worker’s productivity and retain competent hands often. And finally, the only way to achieve Industrial peace between the union and management is for them to negotiate and implement collective bargaining without conflicts as it has been established in this research.
