ABSTRACT
This project work was aimed at showing the effect of powdered banana peel as natural coagulant for treating waste water and the specific objective were to show the effect of coagulation time, stirring speed and dose of coagulant on the removal of total suspended solid, to use excel regression sheet to generate an equation to calculate predicted total suspended solid and plotting a graph of predicted total suspended solid against observed suspended solid. This was done by conducting laboratory test for total suspended solid in turbid water. Total suspended solid in turbid water sample were measured before and after the jar testing using varying dose of coagulant of 20 ml, 50 ml and 50 ml at stirring speed of 5 rpm, 10 rpm and 20 rpm and at coagulation time of 31 min, 32 min and 33 min. Total suspended solid removal efficiency of powdered banana peel obtained from this study was 88.24% at speed, dosage and time of 10 rpm, 50 ml and 32 min. respectively. Banana peel thus exhibited high efficiency in removing total suspended solid. Regression test was done using Microsoft Excel and Data Fit software to obtain an equation to calculate predicted total suspended solid. The equation gotten was “Y =2.004X1- 0.4319X2 - 4.004X3 + 178.8” and it was concluded from the equation obtained that the total suspended solid in turbid water was reduced best at the coefficient of determinant R equals 0.972. This indicates that powdered banana peel when used as natural coagulant for removal of total suspended solid will be 97.2% efficient.
