ABSTRACT

Salon wastewater, laden with a diverse array of pollutants from hair care and cosmetic treatments, poses a significant environmental challenge. The study explores the potential of biochar as an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution for the treatment of salon wastewater. A thorough preliminary assessment establishes the feasibility and suitability of biochar, considering wastewater and biochar properties.

This study investigates the efficiency of biochar in the treatment of saloon waste water which involves the collection and analysis of salon wastewater to determine different water parameters, the concentrations of certain contaminants. Comparison of concentration with relevant standards and treatment with biochar.

The initial pH value of the salon wastewater is recorded as 7.2. A pH of 7.2 falls within the slightly acidic to neutral range. Following treatment, the pH value has increased to 8.3. The initial turbidity value of the salon wastewater was measured at 256.002 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units), Following the treatment process, the turbidity value decreased significantly to 91.184 NTU. The initial TDS value of the salon wastewater was 315 ppm (parts per million). Following the treatment process, the TDS level significantly increased to 1231 ppm. The initial COD value of the salon wastewater was 2200 mg/L. Following the treatment process, the COD level significantly decreased to 928 mg/L. The initial EC value of the salon wastewater was 630 µS/cm (micro - siemens per centimeter). Following the treatment process, the EC level significantly increased to 2462 µS/cm. The initial phosphate value in the salon wastewater was 5.901 mg/L. Following the treatment process, the phosphate level decreased to 5.050 mg/L. Treated wastewater can be used for irrigating non-food crops, landscaping, agricultural purposes, flushing toilets, it may be utilized in industries that do not require high-purity water.
