ABSTRACT

This study investigates the use of banana peel, a readily available agricultural waste, as a coagulant for domestic waste water treatment. Treating wastewater can be costly due to the use of chemical coagulants, which is why many rural residents opt for readily available, but often lower quality, alternatives, exposing themselves to waterborne diseases. The objective was to assess the efficiency of banana peel powder in reducing turbidity in wastewater, thereby promoting eco-friendly and affordable treatment process. The experiment involved collecting banana peels, drying and converting them to powder, determining the proximate analysis of the banana peels, the coagulation and flocculation process was applied to raw domestic wastewater (kitchen waste) samples, and various parameters, including turbidity, pH, conductivity, and total dissolved solids were monitored before and after treatment. Preliminary results show significant reductions in turbidity following the application of banana peel powder coagulant. The study highlights the potential of banana peel as a sustainable coagulant for domestic wastewater treatment, with added benefit of utilizing agricultural waste material.
