ABSTRACT

This research focuses on Transparency International and its fight against corruption in Nigeria since 1999. Transparency International (TI) is a non-governmental organization that monitors and publicizes corporate and political corruption in international arena as a way of fighting against the phenomenon. Originally founded in Germany in May 1993 as a non-for-profit organization. Transparency International is now an international governmental organization known all over the world. It publishes an annual Global Corruption Barometer and Corruption Perceptions Index, a comparative listing of corruption worldwide. Corruption is an endemic evil that totally cripples any form of development in any society. The vice is not exclusive to Nigeria as there are several instances of its manifestation across the globe not excluding the developed countries of the world. However, the continual rise of its perception in Nigeria in general. The effects of corruption on the image and development of Nigeria need not be over emphasized. Notwithstanding its huge potential’s population and resources, the country lies prostrate today owning largely to decades of plunder by successive governments. Nigeria’s inability to achieve enduring political stability is also not unconnected to the damaging effects of corruption, which contributes to undermine the legitimacy of political leaders and public institutions, and thus the capacity of the state to implement development programmes.
