SUMMARY
This study examined the transformation of Benin kingdom into an imperial state. The first chapter provided an overview of the Benin kingdom; the chapter also examined aim and objectives, the statement of problem and the context in which it is being studied. It also included its significance; it helps the reader understand why the research is being conducted and its potential impact. The second chapter encompassed how the Benin Kingdom transformed into an imperial state through its strong military under the various warrior kings from 1500-1800AD. It also analyzed the military strategies employed by the Benin to expand and maintain control. The third chapter surveyed the transformation of the Benin Kingdom into an imperial state presents several peculiarities that distinguish it as a unique historical process. These ranges from their artistic/cultural achievements and trade in bronze, sculpture, ivory, oil, slaves, etc. Italso talks about the Benin kingdom's encounter with colonial powers. The fourth chapter talked about the mistakes of the Benin Kingdom that led to their decline/downfall. It also explained what made Benin to be reduced to the confinement of Edo state.
