ABSTRACT

 Highway development in Nigeria pioneered other modes of transport including rail, air, water and pipeline. It serves as the most efficient means of distributing agricultural products, locally made products and natural resources. As a result of this, highways requires adequate planning and periodic maintenance for effective and efficient performance. This study examined the traffic situation  of Ugbowo-Lagos expressway, Edo State, Nigeria.

In this project manual traffic count method was employed for the estimation of traffic volume and flow pattern. The count took 12 hours a day for Seven consecutive days (Monday - Sunday) of a week. The traffic data gathered were analyzed and interpreted and the ADT, flow situation, capacity utilization rate and level of service of the expressway were determined.

From the study, it was  revealed  that the traffic pattern of weekdays were similar with peak hours at 8am-10am in the morning and 4pm-6pm in the evening and that of weekends was different with peak hours 10am-11am and 9am-10am in the morning for Saturday and Sunday respectively and 3pm -4pm and 4-5pm in the evening for Saturday and Sunday respectively. Findings also revealed that Ugbowo-Lagos expressway was operating beyond the recommended design capacity with peak volumes of 2660veh/hr for Benin bound lane and 2611veh/hr for Lagos bound lane. The level of service was computed to be a level of F. The level of service (LOS) is a qualitative measure of roadway and is divided into six levels ranging from level A to level F. Level A represents the best quality of traffic and level F represents the worst quality of traffic with a lot of congestions. The results provided by this project will be useful in planning and management of highway and its appurtenances while also aiding the solution to the congestion problem plaguing Ugbowo-Lagos expressway.
