ABSTRACT

Traditional marriage in Nigeria often involves a number of complex customs and rituals. These may vary depending on the specific tribe or ethnic group. In general, Nigerian traditional marriages often involve the payment of bride price, which is a symbolic gesture to show respect to the bride's family. In terms of kinship, traditional Nigerian societies tend to have strong social networks based on extended family and clan relationships. Traditional marriage is very important in Igbo society, as it symbolizes the union of two families and the continuation of the lineage. Some key aspects of traditional Igbo marriage which this work has examined are: Bride price, where the groom's family is expected to pay a bride price, or dowry, to the bride's family as a sign of respect and to show that they are capable of taking care of the bride. The Introduction (Iku Aka) is held to formally introduce the families of the bride and groom to each other and to negotiate the terms of the marriage.
