ABSTRACT
Considering a courier service; when sending a huge amount of goods all over the globe, the logistics can be very difficult and very tiring. Even in this modern day and age, human error and paperwork can make a parcel to vanish into thin air, even when the parcel is perfectly safe on its journey. All courier companies today have some kind of courier management software’s installed for a higher service. This study developed a software platform that will help a Courier Service Tracking Information System to locate the current location of cars or parcel with a navigation system installed, this facilitates, among other things, efficient allocation of pick-up and delivery of goods, improve tools utilization, accurate maintenance scheduling, improved goods security, reduces asset losses, and instant assistance for parcels in need of assistant or repair. In this Project it is proposed to design an embedded system which is used for locating and positioning of any parcel by applying Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global system for mobile communication (GSM). The introduction of Global Positioning System (GPS) have efficiently assisted these efforts, as geographic position can now be pinpointed within a number of meters allowing the location of parcel to be accurately analyzed. A GPS based tracking information system can allocate this type of centralized tracking and management which fleet owners need. The system is organized using HTML and the application of PHP programming language for frontend with MySQL as the backend. The item tracking system was created as an application for web with three-tier architecture. Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) was used to produce the personal interfaces for the software application. Hypertext Pre-processor (PHP) was used to handle data transmission from the personal interface to the database and also query requests to the database from the person interface. The main essence of this research work is for the creation of a reliable tracking system for NIPOST, applying a Global Position System (GPS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) to locate the current location of their parcels at any given point in time and to pinpoint the location of these vehicles or vessels.
