ABSTRACT

Sphenocentrum jollyanum Pierre is a member of a diverse family of plants known as Menispermaceae. They are famous for a plethora of important biological functions. S. jollyanum is a shrub native to the tropical forest zones of West Africa and thrives in deep shade. S. jollyanum is employed in folk medicine as a cure for wounds, fever, coughs, high blood pressure, breast tumor, constipation, and as an aphrodisiac. The plant’s toxicological studies were carried out after the aqueous extraction of the stem back. The toxicological on the liver of Sprague dawley rats’ investigations revealed that the plant is a rich source of secondary metabolites that are responsible for its level of increasing the antioxidative enzyme system of defense. The catalase activity was found to be significantly (P<0.05) highest in the group 6 (462.2 ± 13.23) and lowest in group 4 (358.6 ± 13.42) while the MDA level was highest in group 5 (1102.1 ± 50.00) respectively. The AST activity was highest in 5 (145.± 12.01) and significantly (P<0.05) lowest in group 2 (112.9 ± 7.25) respectively while the ALP activity was lowest in group 3 (29.48 ± 1.82) and highest in 4 (60.45 ± 13.11). Thus, this study showed that the plant is a good antioxidant source.
