TOXICOLOGICAL PROFILE OF MOJEAGA HERBAL REMEDY ON FEMALE WISTAR RAT

ABSTRACT

Assessment of the safety of herbal products is a major priority in herbal research. This study examines the toxicological profile of Mojeaga herbal remedy on animal models. In a time-dependent study, using standard procedures chronic toxicity of Mojeaga herbal remedy in female Wistar rats was checked thoroughly through examination of mortality rate, body and organ weight changes, hematological change, biomarkers of liver and kidney functions and histopathological study across all treatment groups with graded doses (150, 300 and 600 mg/kg) of the product administered orally. The result showed that Mojeaga herbal remedy had no toxic effect on the kidney function test,   liver function test , histopathological and hematological indices but a slight significant increase (p < 0.05) on liver and kidney activities across the treated groups relative to the control. There was no significant effect on serum Total Protein (TP), Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), Albumin (ALB) and Creatinine (CREA) urea levels across the treated groups when compared with the control. Mojeaga herbal remedy brought about no change from the normal values relative to the control. Therefore, it was determined from this study that Mojeaga herbal remedy showed bio-protective and stimulating effects on the treated paremeters.
