Abstract

As a result of the many phytochemicals found in medicinal plants, they have the ability to prevent, manage, and cure diseases. The use of A. wilkesiana in herbal medicines dates back to the early years, and it exhibits a number of different pharmacological traits. The aim of the current study was to assess the toxicity of A. wilkesiana. Previous research has suggested that this plant may be taken as a dietary supplement. Acute toxicity study was carried out in 2 phrases within 24hrs. The median lethal dose (LD50) value for the extract was greater than 5,000 mg/kg body weight. There were no visible signs of toxicity such as shivering, lacrimation, hair erection, heartbeat, reduced feeding, water intake, breathing, movement, or death observed in all the animals administered the extracts. Four groups of four healthy rats each were formed out of a total of 16 healthy rats, and they were adequately fed every day. Group 1 was the control and was subjected to regular food and water only, while Groups 2, 3, and 4 received 1000, 1500, and 2000 mg/Kg bwt of the extract respectively. Animals were subjected to an overnight fast after the duration of the investigation and euthanized. The blood sample was collected from the abdominal aorta and analyzed for renal indices. The kidney of the animals were harvested and homogenized while the blood was collected and centrifuged to obtain the serum and both were subjected to biochemical assays. I checked for creatinine, potassium, sodium, chloride, urea levels. Results obtained from this study show that administration of the extract had no significant impact on plasma electrolyte levels (p > 0.05). However, the concentration of plasma sodium ion was significantly decreased in relative to the normal control at a dosage of 1000 mg/Kg bwt of the extract. Hence methanol extract of A. wilkesiana did not show any nephrotoxicity at the highest dose.
