ABSTRACT
This study examined the interface between town and gown in Nigeria over time and space. The need for this study was informed by the imperative to understand the nature of the relationship between Universities in Nigeria and their host communities. It also sought to put into proper perspective the extent to which the town and gown in Nigeria have been influencing one another. The ideological foundation on which this study was built was that Universities were established to help drive a nations’ quest for development and prosperity. The operationality of the University system and administration was expected to serve as a model for statecraft and public administration. This means that politically, the gown was expected to provide the template on which government is done, develop products for industries, and train manpower for national repositioning. But in the Nigerians experience, the reverse had been the case for a while. The influence of the town over the gown is growing exponentially and this is abundantly erodent in the way University students conduct school politics and live their lives.
