ABSTRACT

Within the last two decades, environmental awareness in Nigeria has witnessed a significant decline. In the Niger Delta, for instance, this decline is evident despite the persistent problems of environmental degradation, pollution, conflict, and oil exploitation that have plagued the region. Creating awareness about these issues is therefore essential. Hence, Helon Habila effectively achieves this through the strategic use of symbolism, motifs, and flashbacks in his book, Oil on Water, as unveiled in this study.

This research examines the use of symbolism, motif, and flashback in Helon Habila’s Oil on Water. How Habila masterfully captures and communicates the gravity of the Niger Delta environmental crisis through them.

The methodological approach utilized in this study is the qualitative method because it helps unveil the feelings, perceptions, and attitudes of Habila towards the issue as well as how to curb them.

The study discovers that these literary techniques are not mere embellishments but essential tools in portraying the reality of human and environmental suffering. Hence, they enable readers to empathize with the characters’ struggles and connect emotionally with the environmental crisis. The study however concludes that these literary techniques are tools utilized by Helon Habila to craft a powerful narrative that bridges the gap between individual experiences and the broader socio-environmental context of the Niger Delta.
