SUMMARY
This study establishes the fact that Hip-pop/rap music is a very important part of Nigeria society and projects certain theme and styles which are socio-political realities. Rap music is very popular among Nigeria youth with themes and styles that are fast becoming the moral compass with which youth interpret their social environment in the face of increasing wickedness and corruption within the country. The result of this study offers a thorough look of how artist construct the use of different themes and styles in their lyrics. In the past most research has focused on looking at the prevalence of violence, misogyny, alcohol and drugs, however this work focuses on the corruption, obscenity, hope, hustle and love as themes in recent rap music and also styles of the lyrics with focus on repetition, coinage/neologism, vulgar words, code switching and rhythms. The consumption level of rap music in Nigeria is high and increasing due to the type of themes and styles used by artists in recent rap music. The themes and styles used by artists are directed to the recent situations and happenings of the country and as such it is able to communicate a clear message to the citizens thereby making rap music generally accepted by all age group and race.
