ABSTRACT

This study is on the thematic analysis of Hausa proverbs, it examines themes that can be identified in Hausa proverbs. This study aims to explain the cultural significance of Hausa proverbs, their belief system and traditions. This study entails a thematic analysis of 40 Hausa proverbs, the data for this study was collected from primary and secondary sources, the primary data includes linguistic information gotten from a non-native speaker, she served as the primary informant sharing her knowledge through a virtual interview, the secondary data secondary includes scholarly articles, journals and books. The theoretical framework for this study is critical discourse analysis, it is a qualitative research method that provides a framework for analyzing proverbs and how the cultural elements are manifested through proverbs, it involves a description and explanation of each proverb and a discussion of each theme to identify their moral implication, cultural and social values. The findings of this study reveals a connection between the culture and religion of the people, gender inequality, tribalism and a strong commitment to religion. Through the preservation and educational utilization of proverbs, a good understanding and appreciation of Hausa proverbs and the Hausa culture can be achieved. The study recommends that Hausa proverbs should be taught in the Hausa society to promote a good understanding of the language and its culture.
